An exceptional pair of large traditional earlobe plugs, meticulously hand-carved from genuine native black hardwood by local craftsmen in Attapeu Province, southern Laos. Created entirely by hand without artificial coloring or modern manufacturing techniques, these impressive ornaments represent a continuation of the indigenous body adornment traditions once practiced throughout parts of mainland Southeast Asia.
Historically, similar oversized plugs were produced from highly valued materials such as ivory, horn, hardwood, and other locally available resources, depending on the community and period. This pair follows the classic traditional form while being crafted from dense natural black wood polished to a remarkable lustrous finish.
The wood is exceptionally hard and heavy, giving the plugs an elegant, stone-like appearance while retaining the warmth and individuality of a natural organic material. Their substantial size and quality craftsmanship make them suitable for collectors of ethnographic jewelry as well as experienced wearers of large-gauge body jewelry.
