Large Brass Aso Kayan (Dragon Dog) Ear Weights – Dayak, West Kalimantan (Borneo)
Large Brass Aso Kayan (Dragon Dog) Ear Weights – Dayak, West Kalimantan (Borneo)
A striking pair of traditional Dayak ear weights featuring the Aso (dragon-dog) motif—one of the most powerful protective symbols in Bornean tribal art. These sculptural forms reflect status, identity, and spiritual protection, historically worn by Dayak communities known for their elaborate body adornment and warrior culture.
Hand-cast in solid brass, this pair shows authentic age through a deep, natural patina and subtle surface wear, consistent with long-term use. The stylized double Aso heads with flowing curves and pronounced snouts are characteristic of Kayan/Kenyah artistic influence from West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Such pieces were worn in stretched earlobes, signifying maturity, prestige, and lineage.
Well-balanced and fully intact, these are both wearable and collectible, representing a diminishing tradition as original examples become increasingly scarce.
