PAIR OF RARE ANTIQUE TIBETAN MEN’S EARRINGS – SILVER, CORAL, TURQUOISE & GLASS
TIBET – EARLY 20TH CENTURY (CIRCA 1900–1950)

A rare and authentic pair of traditional Tibetan men’s earrings, hand-crafted in silver and set with red coral, turquoise, and glass elements. Originating from Tibet and dating to the first half of the 20th century, these earrings represent a distinctive form of Himalayan tribal jewelry associated with cultural identity, protection, and social status.

Each earring is vertically composed with carefully arranged elements, combining ornamental symbolism with skilled metalwork. The use of coral and turquoise—materials historically valued across Tibetan culture—reflects both aesthetic preference and spiritual significance.

Materials (bottom to top):
Dyed glass bead | hand-crafted filigree silver bead | dyed glass bead | filigree silver bead | red coral bead | turquoise set in silver

The construction shows clear evidence of traditional hand fabrication, including fine filigree work and natural irregularities consistent with period craftsmanship.

Cultural Context – Usage:

  • Daily Wear: Traditionally, Tibetan men—especially in nomadic and rural communities—often wore a single earring in the left ear as a symbol of protection, strength, or lineage.

  • Ceremonial Wear: During festivals, weddings, and religious gatherings, men commonly wore earrings in both ears. These pairs were typically more elaborate, incorporating coral, turquoise, and silver to signify wealth, status, and cultural pride.

Symbolism:
Wearing a matching pair during ceremonial occasions represented:
– Connection to heritage and ancestral traditions
– Respect for spiritual beliefs and protective symbolism
– Visible expression of prosperity and social standing

Condition:
Very good for age – fully intact, structurally sound, and rare as a complete matching pair. Displays a natural aged patina with well-preserved materials and craftsmanship (see images).

Lightly cleaned to preserve detail while maintaining original patina
