PAIR OF ANTIQUE COPPER ALLOY TRIBAL EAR HOOK EARRINGS – POSSIBLY LANNA (NORTHERN THAILAND)
SUNBURST / ROSETTE FINIAL – LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY (CIRCA 1880–1930)

A distinctive pair of antique copper alloy ear hook earrings from mainland Southeast Asia, most likely originating from the Lanna (Lan Na) cultural sphere of northern Thailand, with possible regional overlap into Laos.

The earrings feature a classic hook-form body terminating in a dimensional sunburst or rosette finial. In this example, the floral terminals are of multi-part construction, combining cast and hand-applied elements, resulting in a more layered and sculptural appearance. This method reflects traditional fabrication techniques where casting was complemented by manual assembly and detailing.

The radiating floral motif is characteristic of regional ornament traditions and may carry associations with vitality, protection, and social identity within local dress systems.

The surface presents a well-developed aged patina, with areas of green verdigris typical of copper-based alloys. Subtle tonal variations and highlights suggest the possible presence of former gilding or gold surface enrichment, a feature occasionally applied to enhance visual prestige and ceremonial value.

Attribution & Cultural Context:
The form, scale, and construction are consistent with ear ornaments documented among northern Thai and adjacent cultural groups, including Lanna (Tai Yuan) and Tai Lue communities. Hook-style earrings of this type were worn in stretched earlobes by women and functioned as markers of beauty, maturity, and cultural identity.

While precise ethnic attribution remains open, the typology and workmanship strongly support a northern Thailand origin rather than Khmer lowland production.

Material: Copper alloy (cast and hand-assembled elements)
Region: Northern Thailand (Lanna region), possibly Laos border areas
Period: Late 19th – early 20th century (circa 1880–1930)

Weight: Approx. 5.32 grams (pair)
Dimensions: Length 35 mm | Width 17 mm | Depth 20 mm
Earlobe Hole Size: Approx. 3 mm

Condition:
Good antique condition with stable structure and attractive aged patina. One earring shows loss to part of the inner floral element (see images), consistent with age and long use. No modern repairs observed. The remaining structure is solid and displays clear hand-fabricated character.

Notes:
– Multi-part construction combining casting and applied elements
– Possible traces of original gilding or surface enrichment
– Natural patination consistent with copper alloy composition
– Ethnographic and collectible example of Southeast Asian tribal jewelry

Lightly cleaned to preserve detail while maintaining original patina
