YAO (IU MIEN) SILVER EARRINGS WITH RED GLASS DISCS
Northern Thailand / Laos – Antique Tribal Jewelry (Late 19th–Early 20th Century)
Rare and authentic pair of Yao (Iu Mien) tribal earrings from the northern Thailand–Laos border region, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. These earrings feature hand-forged curved hoops in a mixed silver alloy, each adorned with a vivid red glass disc pendant.
The combination of metal and colored glass reflects the integration of trade materials into traditional hill-tribe adornment. The red glass elements provide strong visual contrast and were culturally associated with vitality, protection, and social identity, while silver functioned as both ornament and a portable store of wealth.
Original matched pairs with intact glass components are increasingly scarce, particularly in this well-preserved condition, making them desirable for collectors of Southeast Asian ethnographic jewelry.
