YAO (IU MIEN) SILVER EARRINGS WITH LEAF DANGLES
Northern Laos / Thailand – Early to Mid-20th Century Tribal Jewelry
Authentic pair of Yao (Iu Mien) tribal earrings from northern Laos / northern Thailand, dating to the early to mid-20th century. These finely crafted pieces feature solid hoop forms terminating in repoussé floral elements, each suspending two articulated leaf-shaped pendants.
The combination of engraved hoop detailing, floral terminals, and moving leaf dangles reflects traditional Yao silversmithing, where ornamentation carried both aesthetic and symbolic meaning. The articulated pendants create subtle movement when worn and were culturally associated with protection, while the floral motif relates to continuity and life cycles.
Crafted in a mixed silver alloy with tested medium silver content, consistent with regional hill-tribe jewelry of the period. The surface shows a natural, even patina developed through age and use, supporting authenticity.
