ANTIQUE SILVER MIAO BUTTERFLY-FORM DANGLING EARRING – SOUTHWEST CHINA
Early to Mid-20th Century
A striking antique silver earring attributed to the Miao people of Southwest China, dating to the early–mid 20th century. This piece represents a highly decorative ceremonial type, characterized by complex multi-component construction and dynamic movement.
The upper section features a layered, symmetrical form combining floral and butterfly-inspired motifs, a common symbolic language in Miao adornment. Beneath this fixed element, a secondary cluster of pendants is suspended on a movable loop, allowing the lower assembly to slide freely along the hoop. This creates subtle motion and sound when worn—an intentional design element in traditional festive jewelry.
The composition includes multiple dangling elements—leaf-shaped, spiral, and stamped plates—arranged in a tiered structure that enhances both visual depth and kinetic effect.
Crafted in medium-silver-content metal (tested), the earring displays a natural aged patina consistent with authentic use and traditional handcraft techniques. The weight and scale indicate ceremonial use, where bold silver ornaments signified presence, identity, and cultural continuity.
