ANTIQUE THAI YAI (SHAN) GLASS EAR PLUG – BROWN – MEAWADEE REGION, BURMA (MYANMAR)
ANTIQUE THAI YAI (SHAN) GLASS EAR PLUG – BROWN – MEAWADEE REGION, BURMA (MYANMAR)
An authentic Thai Yai (Shan) ear plug from the Meawadee region of Burma (Myanmar), an area historically connected to regional trade networks and known for diverse traditions of personal adornment.
This piece is hand-formed in brown glass, displaying a fine internal shimmer caused by natural irregularities such as micro-bubbles and inclusions—typical of earlier glassmaking methods. The material has not been formally tested; however, its visual characteristics are consistent with non-industrial glass production.
The form is a classic cylindrical plug designed for stretched earlobes, a practice historically documented among various ethnic groups in the Burma–Northern Thailand region. The proportions are balanced, with a smooth surface showing light, age-consistent wear.
Glass ear plugs from this region are less commonly encountered than metal examples, and were likely valued for their color, translucency, and visual effect rather than intrinsic material worth.
Condition is very good for its age: fully intact, structurally sound, and wearable. Minor surface wear is consistent with age and possible ground exposure.
A solid collectible example of Southeast Asian tribal glass adornment.
Sold as a single piece.
