ANCIENT PYU SILVER COIN – SRIVATSA MOTIF (MYANMAR REGION)

A rare and historically significant silver coin, later adapted into a wearable pendant, originating from the ancient Pyu cultural sphere of present-day Myanmar. These early silver units represent one of the earliest known monetary and symbolic systems in mainland Southeast Asia, dating approximately from the 4th to 9th century CE.

The piece features a central abstract radiating motif consistent with the Srivatsa symbol—an auspicious emblem associated with prosperity, continuity, and cosmological order in early Indian-influenced Southeast Asian cultures. Surrounding the central design is a border of pellet dots, a characteristic element of Pyu coinage, executed with visible hand-worked irregularity that reinforces its authenticity and early origin.

Originally struck or cast as currency, the coin was later pierced and repurposed as an amulet or personal ornament, reflecting a long-standing regional tradition of transforming symbolic objects into protective or status-bearing jewelry. This transition from currency to adornment adds both cultural depth and historical narrative to the piece.

Crafted from high-content silver typical of early Southeast Asian metallurgy, the surface displays natural aging and patina consistent with prolonged use and age. The condition remains very good, with all primary design elements intact and clearly legible. The piece is fully wearable and equally suitable for serious collectors of ethnographic or numismatic material.
