SHAN STATE, BURMA — HIGH-SILVER TRIBAL EAR PLUG (FLESH TUNNEL)
XRF TESTED — SINGLE PIECE
A refined and authentic high-silver ear plug originating from the highland cultures of Eastern Burma, most plausibly Shan State. This type of body ornament was traditionally worn by ethnic groups of the region—such as Shan and Palaung (Ta’ang)—where stretched earlobes signified maturity, identity, and social continuity.
Crafted in a clean, symmetrical, and minimally adorned form, this example reflects a functional yet disciplined aesthetic typical of regional silversmithing. The high silver content, confirmed by XRF testing, aligns with traditional practices favoring near-pure silver alloys, valued for both status and material integrity. The absence of hallmarks is consistent with tribal production.
Plain-form tunnels of this proportion and quality are increasingly difficult to source, particularly in wearable condition. Likely dating to the mid-20th century or earlier, the piece shows natural age wear while remaining fully intact.
