TRIBAL SILVER SCREW-BACK EAR PLUGS – SHAN / KACHIN, MYANMAR (BURMA)
TRIBAL SILVER SCREW-BACK EAR PLUGS – SHAN / KACHIN, MYANMAR (BURMA)
A striking pair of traditional tribal screw-back ear plugs associated with the Shan / Kachin regions of Myanmar (Burma), crafted in tested high silver-content alloy, they have ends in the form of a chedi. These wearable ethnic ornaments feature a functional threaded screw mechanism at the back, designed to securely fasten through stretched earlobes.
Such forms were traditionally worn among tribal communities of the Southeast Asian highlands, where stretched-ear adornment symbolized identity, status, and cultural continuity. Original examples are becoming increasingly difficult to source as traditional silverworking and tribal adornment practices continue to disappear.
The pair displays a strong sculptural conical form with detailed raised silverwork and rich aged character. Fully intact and wearable.
